Le premier numéro de Noël remonte à 1886 et est réalisé à l'initiative de Lucien Marc.

Ce numéro, préparé tout au long de l'année, mobilise plus de deux cents ouvrières uniquement pour assurer les collages intérieurs !

La livraison gratuite de ce numéro, à ses abonnés, constitue un manque à gagner pour L'Illustration, mais qui est compensé par le recrutement de nouveaux lecteurs, attiré par cette incroyable recherche artistique.
Vendu à perte, L'Illustration offre alors une véritable prime à ses abonnés.

L'actualité est exclue de ce numéro qui ne comporte que des gravures, des contes, romans, nouvelles ou poèmes, choisis parmi ce qui se fait de mieux à l'époque. Les illustrations en taille douce (!), estampes hors texte et tiré à part pour être ensuite collés dans le magazine, fac-similés d'aquarelles, expliquent l'engouement des collectionneurs pour ces numéros encore aujourd'hui très recherchés.
